Vacation Rentals Vs. Hotels – Part 1

Princeville Kauai Vacation Rental Home

I own two Vacation Rental homes, one in Princeville Kauai and one in upstate New York in the Adirondack Mountains.

Vacation rentals are a budget friendly way of vacationing. Families often times have to get two hotel rooms, one for the parents and one for the kids so the bills add up quickly. Then factor in the meals eaten out and vacationing for families become and an expensive ordeal and one that many of us can’t afford anymore. That’s where vacation rentals come into play, they provide large living space, multiple bedrooms, kitchens for meals, and often times many extras such as private pools, video libraries for entertainment, bikes, beach chairs and toys, and last but not least…LOWER PRICE TAG!

In my vacation rental homes I provide all the things I expect to have when I vacation; a clean organized house, area guide books for exploring, golf clubs, mountain bikes, boogie boards, beach towels, snorkel gear, beach toys, books, video library, WiFi (free!), washer and dryer and a fully equipped kitchen.

So when you’re thinking about your next vacation, don’t limit yourself to local hotels because I can guarantee you will save a bundle of money on booking a vacation rental instead!

Try it and you will never go back!

Planning your trip and wondering what the number one thing you should do is? You simply cannot leave Kauai without taking a helicopter tour of the island. It is called the “Garden Island” because it’s wet climate has grown the greenest and most beautiful setting. Eons of rain and ocean waves have carved out rock and cliffs that are amazing to behold. You can also take advantage of this scenery by booking a kayak tour if you want to get physical while sightseeing!

Large coral reefs mean an abundance of choice snorkeling spots for marine life lovers. Slip on your flippers and book a snorkeling trip do see the fantastic sea life! You can also catch a few fish yourself by booking a fishing charter. Try to hook the catch of a lifetime while visiting Kauai!

Kauai Beaches – Kawailoa Bay

Kawailoa Bay (Maha’ulepu)

Kawailoa Bay Kauai

Kawailoa Bay Kauai

Maha’ulepu is a research site and habitat for endangered plants and animals as well as a sacred area for native Hawaiians. This beach is more for hiking and looking; currents can be strong, sharp coral and large waves prohibit safe swimming. It is remote and rugged with strong winds but great coastal hikes, if you catch it right you might get to see the experts kite boarding or wind surfing!

Not all beaches are for swimming, some like Kawailoa Bay are great for exploring the coastline and experiencing the power of the ocean. They all have their special feel!

Dirt road access with limited parking.

Pluses:

  • Miles of Coastal Hikes

Minuses:

Kauai Beaches – Prince Kuhio Beach

Prince Kuhio Beach

Prince Kuhio Beach Kauai

Prince Kuhio Beach Kauai

A short narrow beach with great snorkeling and paddle boarding in the winter. It is right on the road so you can’t miss it, parking might be limited. just look for the snorkelers and you will know you’ve found it!

If the surf is up, the beach disappears entirely, mostly reef bottom, not great for swimming. With larger swells in the summer you can watch some great surfing here!

  • Scuba diving
  • Fishing
  • Facilities

Minuses:

Kauai South Beaches – Shipwrecks Beach

» Posted on Oct 08 2012

Shipwrecks Beach

Shipwreck Beach Kauai

Made famous when  Harrison Ford and Anne Heche plunged from the cliff in “6 Days and 7 Nights”.  The landmark Shipwreck rock defines the beach where it is less crowded than Po’ipu, great sand but the surf is a steeper drop off and not for novice swimmers. Not a beach to swim at but great for relaxing and watching kids jump off the Shipwreck rock…very daring and not for me, but cool to see! There are facilities and some parking available, no lifeguards.

The Maha’ulepu Trail starts here, incredible geological wonders can be seen while wandering along the coast to Keoneloa Bay. Take plenty of water, sun screen and some good shoes as the terrain gets rough, well worth the trek! Native flora and fauna and cultural sites. Really cool hike!

Pluses:

  • Less crowds than Po’ipu Beach
  • Facilities
  • Parking available
  • Bodyboarding
  • Beach shoreline hike (The Maha’ulepu Trail)

Minuses:

  • No Lifeguards
  • Steep beach can create a tricky undertow and waves that break right on the sand. Swim with caution
  • Not good for novice swimmers or small children
  • Not much shade

Kauai Beaches – Po’ipu Beach Park

» Posted on Oct 08 2012

Po’ipu Beach Park

Poipu Beach Park Kauai

Poipu Beach Park, Kauai

Po’ipu is one of Kauai’s most popular beaches, making it to the “Top 5″ beaches list numerous times. In the winter months when the North Shore beaches can be rough, Po’ipu Beach is usually calm, great for snorkeling and enjoying a beach day! It’s not a huge beach but there is plenty of room to spread out for a picnic with the family, the protected swimming area provides a safe swimming area for the keikis and novice swimmers.

Nice beach to take a walk, near restaurants and hotels for good eats! Shade from trees and pavilions, lots of great sand and a perfect spot for sunsets!

During summer and holidays it can get really busy making it difficult to find a spot to relax. Monk seals frequently come to spend the day sleeping on the beach oblivious to all the people making a fuss over them, so keep an eye out for them they are always a treat to see!

Pluses:

  • Great for Families
  • Lifeguards
  • Pavilions
  • Parking available
  • Bathroom/shower facilities
  • Picnic Tables
  • Some shade
  • Surf board rental
  • Restaurants nearby
  • Monk seals are frequent visitors!

Minuses:

Poipu Beach Park

Poipu Beach Park

  • Gets busy on Holidays, weekends and summer
  • Watch for the sharp coral when swimming in shallow water
