Kilauea Lighthouse Bird Sanctuary
Kilauea Lighthouse is just a short drive from our vacation rental home in Princeville. It is the Northern most point of the Hawaiian Islands. The lighthouse was built in 1913 with one of the largest clamshell lens in existence, in the 1970′s it was replaced by a beacon which still shines today!
This is also the location of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for seabirds. At any one time you will find varies bird species flying overhead and nesting in the immediate area. Nene, frigates, shearwaters, boobies and Laysan albatrosses are just a few of what you will find when visiting the refuge. Binoculars are available to view the birds in their habitat.
Along with the birds you will also see humpback whales (winter season), dolphins, turtles and seals at various locations. Needless to say, the Kilauea Lighthouse is a great way to spend an afternoon! Don’t miss it!
